What focal ratio would you recommend on a telescope for general use.?

A telescope's focal ratio is actually pretty much irrelevant for visual observation, since you can choose appropriate eyepieces to get the magnifications you want. Long focal ratios can be inconvenient because of the ong tubes involved, and short focal ratios can have more serious aberrations, but I've used scopes all the way from f/4 to f/25.
